The Moorings lost its Abacos base to devastating Hurricane Dorian, but its Nassau charter operation with access to the Exumas remains open.
Hurricane Dorian eviscerated much of the northwestern Bahamian islands, mainly the Abaco Islands and Grand Bahama Island when the Category 5 storm stalled for about 48 hours beginning September 1, 2019. Hundreds of lives were lost, and the death toll continues to rise into October.
Among the structural losses was The Moorings base in Marsh Harbour on Great Abaco. All charter guests and nearly all of its fleet were safely evacuated prior to landfall, and all local staff members are safe. The business is helping to accommodate them on nearby Bahamian islands. While the islands recover, The Moorings wants those with winter charter plans to know that its nearby base at Palm Cay Marina on the island of Nassau, in the eastern Bahamas, is fully operational.
"It's a straight shot to the Exumas," says Ian Pedersen, Marketing Manager for North America. "We're encouraging everyone to not cancel their plans to go to the Bahamas because we have a means for getting you there. And you'll be directly helping the local economy recover."
Pedersen says the charter company has not given up on returning to Great Abaco, but the island's recovery will take years.
The Moorings’ sister charter company, Sunsail, is also moving its Bahamas operation to Palm Cay Marina for the foreseeable future. For information on The Moorings' Bahamas base, visit moorings.com/exumas
